We have inside information that the Goonies animated series may get the green light after all.

Goonies Never Say Die!

As of October 2007, the latest news is that so far Sean, Corey, Jeff and Jonathan have all been approached and they are all very interested in the animated series ... so fingers crossed! See page 3 for press articles.

I will post more information as soon as I receive it.

Ok folks, as Ron and Pat were in L.A this week, they were able to enquire further into the animated series issue. Apparantly, Ron has received word from the "big wigs" that there is still a chance/glimmer of hope on this project afterall and the official word from the "big wigs" on the cartoon is...... "Goonies Never Say Die!"

So, watch this space for more information!!

Hey folks,

Ron just announced that was the big surprise that we'd all been waiting for. See his post further down for his reply. Basically, a cartoon series was in the works, but sadly the project had to be cancelled. Nevermind, at least we have the fabulous Documentary to look forward to still

NOW we can finally talk about this! Shoot, we have been tight lipped since before the Goonies 20th Anniversary Event in Astoria. I have the prints tucked away in my desk, now we can at least display them properly. I'm waiting to hear back from Damon to get the official word on the project's demise, but it seems most of the news is out. Too bad about it not happening, since there was talk of Pat and I getting to be in it as well. I guess the only cartoon version of Pat in existence will have to be the one his daughter drew of him with three eyes. What a shame.

Probably because theres already too much rubbish on tv along those lines already, they didnt think to add more.

A series would maybe be a bit much, even a miniseries could be good enough. If you put all plot hooks in the most basic of terms, such as 'Goonies look for One-Eyed Willy's ship in Pacific', 'Fratellis get out of jail again', 'Sloth's life with Chunk' or 'Origins of One-Eyed Willy' it would only span a few episodes really. But if somebody here had talents in simple CG animation or Flash or anything, everybody could flesh out their Goonies scripts/ideas that way.

Stop and THINK before you suggest a Goonies cartoon... Scooby Doo... add Scrappy... CRAP!!

Ghostbusters (later The Real Ghostbusters) cartoon.. add Slimer.. then the Junior Ghostbusters.. CRAP!! (although they had one of the best scifi/fiction writers of all time up until season two, J Michael Straczynski)

I shudder in horror to think how they would totally massacre and ruin the Goonies Legacy. I think because they never HAVE done anything with it is how it has lived so long in our hearts.

I have to agree with you.

I remember how awful I though Fraggle Rock was after they changed that from puppets to animation. Rubbish! And Fraggle Rock, even though I loved it, is no way as dear to me as The Goonies.

I mean, the Fraggles being muppets were part of the show's charm! It's just so cool seeing the amzing things those creative people can do with muppets.

And if had ever become a cartoon, I could easily imagine different (voice) actors being used, and sooner or later additional characters being added (Mikey's evil twin brother, anyone?), and the show just losing its focus...e.g. the Goonies become a time travelling band who fight against the Fratellis' ancestors down through time (LoL).

Strange as it sounds, they DID develop a cartoon series. I have seen a few of the cels from the show... the guy ( I forget his name now) who played Sloth's stunt double mentioned this to me at one point, and I followed it up. Never been lucky enough to score actual scans.

Gee, that certainly is news to me! What did the Goonies look like in cartooon form, Erik? Any good?

When you say they "developed" a cartoon series, though, do you mean actually MAKE the series, or just come up with some character drawings and/or maybe do a "pilot" episode?

Sadly yes, in the states The Fraggle Rock cartoon was on NBC Saturday Mornings in the late 1980's after like 3 hours of Smurfs episodes and a horrible animated guilty pleasure of mine based on Saturday Night Live character Ed Grimley. I would HATE to see anything goonie related done on saturday morning without the touch of a fantastic studio like Ruby/ Spears. I mean if you are going to license a product, go all the way, otherwise it's not cool. I know I refer to the same Ruby/Spears that worked on animated series' such as Plastic Man and Dragon's Lair and SOME may turn their stomachs at the prospect but I happen to love those series (which were also licensed properties). It was Pazsaz who did the Fraggle Rock series, blame them. :-P

Thanks all, it was alot of fun to design, it is always fun to design things you have a little special attachment towards. I loved the movie myself. One of the things that happened was the original actors wanted to much money to use their likeness. and of course the WB did,nt want to pay. Oh well.

So, lemme get this straight. This was the surprise that we've all been waiting for? An animated Goonie series, which was going to be aired by WB, but then got cancelled? If so, BUMMER! That really and truly sucks! I do look forward to seeing whatever scans are in existence though.
