Little do the Goonies know what adventure lies waiting for them inside-and below-the decrepit Lighthouse Lounge. This scene demonstrates the incrediable lengths Director Donner and the production crew went to bring verisimilitude-complete believability-to the film. What apppears to be an abandoned logging camp, complete with a beat-up mess hall and lighthouse, is really an intricately constructed set. It was erected in a state park overlooking Cannon Beach, south of Astoria. The original idea, says Production Designer Riva, was to have a cemetery on the hill, with the Goonies hiding behind gravestones. But owing to the area's rich lumbering history, they opted for the logging camp look. It took about three and a half weeks to build the set; the crew was hampered much of the time by 60 mph winds. The paint department weathered the lumber and even created 'moss' on the wood by mixing sawdust with green paint. The top of the lighthouse looks like it's been through a fire; the crew fastened some carred pieces of wood up there. The crowning touch was to shatter the railings, walls, and windows, to give it the run-down look. This was the handiwork of Riva (Michael), who was left alone at the site for a while with a sledgehammer. Finally, the surrounding area was littered with pieces of driftwood, old logs, and railroad ties. Now that's verisimilitude!

Ooh this is great shaz thanks! You are doing double duty this week girl.

You wouldn't happen to know where any explanation info on Sloth's make up is would you? The only special effects stuff I know is what they mention in the commentary and I need something on that for the site.

Thanks for all the hard work!

Alex

You're welcome. It's my pleasure;)

This is all I have found so far:
Sloth's makeup consisted of 15 overlapping sections.
Foam latex was sculpted around a mechanical headpiece that allowed Sloth's droopy eye and dumbo ears to move, via radio controls.
The makeup was created by The Burman Studio team.

More to come later. My pc's messing about;) I have some blurb about what the Makeup team had to say etc.

I thought I remembered reading something somewhere about a cemetary... you wouldn't happen to have one of those sketches with the gravestones in it, would you? I've seen them before, but I can't remember where now.

Thanks shaz you rock!

I have another little blurb on Sloth's life but i'm not sure if this is made up by the writer of the page or from the Goonies book or what? Look at all familiar?
I'm having a lot of problems with sloth/john matuszak. There are so many conflicting reports on his death. Whether he was 38 or 39.. .whether it was due to AIDS or a drug overdose or a heart attack...Maybe the heart attack was complications from one or the other? Imdb says one thing ESPN says another. I'm trying to locate a copy of his autobiography in the local bookstore or library but it wouldn't have anything on his death.

Alex

Sloth Bio?
Sloth was born Jude Fratelli on Jan. 12th, 1962. Ma Fratelli planned on having a home delivery, but complications had arisen. She was rushed to the hospital whereupon she was promptly given a C-section. The neworn Jude was 15 pounds, 12 ounces...

Jude was a very complying child, but Ma's pension for booze, man-whores, and crime rendered her an incapable mother. One night after a raging kegger, Ma arrived to home to a crying Jude. The stench of booze on her breath only foreshadowed the events to come. She hastily grabbed the child and rushed down the stairs...The rest is history. Ma suffered minor cuts and bruises while Jude was left with a debilitating injury that would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Jude's injury not damaged his physical appearance, but interferred with his cognition as well. He was held back many times and placed into special education classes. His cruel and unwanting teachers appropriately dubbed him "Sloth".

Sloth underwent years psychological torture without relent as his two brothers (Francis & Jake), Ma, and his classmates and teachers all but abandoned this poor soul.

It wasn't until high school that Sloth found his niche. The streamline design of his head allowed him to cut through water with an uncanny speed. Just as his awards piled up, so did the letters from colleges who overlooked over his intelligence level. Ma became spiteful of his success...

As his mother and brothers' apparant involvement crime became evident, it was almost impossile for Sloth to escape unscathed. In the avoidance of Sloth babbling, they conjured up the malicious lie that they were looting to save up for his facial reconstruction surgery. Eventually, they thought it was too risky to let Sloth mingle freely among the public, so they chained him into captivity like a wild animal. (Watch Goonies to see how the rest turns out)

Hey Alex,

That does look familiar but i'll look into for you later (in a hurry at mo). One thing I did notice is that I always thought Sloth's real name was Lotney Fratelli*confused shaz*

As for John Matuszak, I heard that he died of AIDS but you are right there are sooo many conflicting storys.

Again, i'll have a root about for you and let you know.
I can't wait for your site. Sounds like it's going to be fantastic;)

Have a good day,

www.YouGoonie.com

Thanks for all that you do shaz!
Alex

Edited to add.. To anyone who clicks that, let me know if it looks weird or loads too slow or anything so I can fix it! I only have on view on IE to go on. Thanks!

No worries Alex;)

I love the look of your site. It looks great. (It loaded fine for me too.) I know you've worked so hard on it. I bet it's absolutley jam packed full of info.

Going back to Sloth; what do you think about his name being Lotney 'Sloth' Fratelli rather than Jude?

Have a good weekend;)

Thanks for checking it out for me! I hope you and everyone else will enjoy it.
As to the sloth questions, you know I am banking on Lotney because i've never seen Jude before now. And this story is a little familiar to me as well but for all I know it's fan fiction, so I'll leave it out of the site until I can confirm for sure. I need a copy of the novel! :)
You have a good one too shaz!

Alex,

More on Sloths makeup:

A kiss is just a kiss. Unless it's from the lips of Sloth.
Witness Chunk's reaction: "Man! You smell like Phys Ed!"
Creating Sloth combined many talents. "We wanted to
make Sloth a Goony who hadn't yet joined the club," says
Screenplay Writer Columnus. "He could be the president
of the Goonies. It was our intention, too, to make Sloth
a hero at the end of the film. We also wanted him to be
an older version of Chunk. They both like to eat and
watch TV, and each, in his own way, has been blocked
off from the world." Once the concept jelled, the makeup
was the trick. "This is probably the most difficult makeup
i've ever done, and I don't know of another that has as
many pieces (15 overlapping sections in all) or this much
involvement...and such a hell of a gut to wear it," says
Makeup Chief Tom Burman during one daily four-hour
sessions. Each morning, he and his wife Bari adn brother
Sonny labored to transform Matuszak into Sloth. Their
proprietary foam latex was sculpted, fresh each day,
around a mechanical headpiece that allows Sloth's droopy
eye and Dumbo ears to move, via radio controls.
Nonetheless, the character was nowhere without the abilities
of former Raiders defensive lineman Matuszak. Says Director
Donner: "I think the best thing I can say about Sloth is that
about 10 minutes after we've met him, everybody's going to
want to own a Sloth. But alot of Sloth is Matuszak. He's one
of the sweetest, most sensitive, and interesting actors I've
worked with." Finally, Matuszak offers his own impressions
of the character. "Sloth is a big old boy, who was born
deformed but has a heart off gold. Even though he's
mistreated by his criminal family, he sees his way clear to
be a kind and good kid."

The Burman Studio team (from left), Bari, Tom and Sonny. John Matuszak (seated)

Hope that helps;)

I just realized, these pictures of Sloth must be mirrored as his droppy eye is on his left in the movie, such as this pic:

hehe, yeah barbossa, its kinda like how they first thought billy the kid was a righty by his picture, but in fact was a lefty as the old style photography equipment used to take his picture superimposed "flipped" the negative in processing. Good eye! I looked at that mag I dunno hom many times but never really caught that one!
